Fibonacci vs T-Shirt Sizing: Which Estimation Scale Should You Use?
Two of the most popular estimation techniques in agile โ but which one is right for your team?
What is Fibonacci Estimation?
Fibonacci estimation uses the Fibonacci sequence (0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34...) to assign story points to user stories. The increasing gaps between numbers force teams to think about the relative effort of tasks rather than exact hours. A story rated "8" is not exactly 8 hours โ it means it's significantly more complex than a "5" but less than a "13".
What is T-Shirt Sizing?
T-Shirt sizing uses clothing sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL) to categorize user stories by relative effort. It's more intuitive and less intimidating than numbers, especially for teams new to agile estimation. There's no temptation to convert sizes into hours.
When to Use Fibonacci
Fibonacci works best when your team needs precise, comparable estimates. It's the industry standard for story point estimation and integrates well with velocity tracking and sprint capacity planning.
- Teams that track velocity over sprints
- Projects that need comparable metrics across sprints
- Experienced agile teams comfortable with numeric estimation
- When you need to feed data into project management tools like Jira
When to Use T-Shirt Sizing
T-Shirt sizing is ideal for quick, high-level estimation โ especially during backlog grooming or early-stage planning when precision isn't critical.
- Teams new to agile estimation
- Backlog grooming sessions where speed matters
- Non-technical stakeholders participating in estimation
- Early project phases with high uncertainty
- When the goal is rough categorization, not precise points
Side-by-Side Comparison
Fibonacci gives you granular, trackable data โ great for velocity charts and sprint metrics. T-Shirt sizing gives you fast, intuitive categorization โ great for quick alignment. Many teams use T-Shirt sizing for initial backlog grooming and switch to Fibonacci for sprint planning.
Our Recommendation
Start with Fibonacci if your team is comfortable with numbers and wants to track velocity. Start with T-Shirt sizing if your team is new to estimation or if you have mixed technical/non-technical participants.
